Offshore vs nearshore vs onshore assistants: hours, accent, cost and management: AssistBPO guide cover

Choosing an offshore vs onshore virtual assistant comes down to four things: the hours you need covered, how much accent matters for your phones, the cost per productive hour, and who manages the person. Onshore costs the most and needs the least explaining; offshore and nearshore win on price and coverage when the provider manages the desk.

What do offshore, nearshore and onshore mean for you?

The labels are relative to where you sit.

  • Onshore is an assistant in your own country: a US-based EA for a Chicago founder, a UK virtual PA for a London firm, a Sydney-based assistant for an Australian broker.
  • Nearshore is a neighboring region on a similar clock: Latin America for US and Canadian buyers; South Africa and continental Europe for UK buyers.
  • Offshore is a distant region with a large time difference: the Philippines and South Asia for North American buyers. For an Australian buyer the Philippines is effectively nearshore, because Manila runs two hours behind Sydney and the working days line up.

That last point is the whole argument in one line. Geography matters less than the shift the assistant is actually working when your phone rings.

How do the six regions compare?

Every figure below is a published third-party range for 2026, hourly unless stated. Rates for managed offshore desks are what agencies publish to clients, not what the assistant is paid.

Philippines$4 to $17 an hour (Wishup, Cherry Assistant, Zedtreeo, 2026)Night shift for the assistantNight shift for the assistantAlmost full: 2 hours behind Sydney

South Asia (UTC+5), including AssistBPO’s second office in Pakistan$7 to $15 an hour typical managed range; $640 to $2,400 a month full time (Wishup, Cherry Assistant, Zedtreeo, VantaStaff, 2026)Staffed night shiftFull: 2pm to 10pm local covers the UK dayPartial: 9am AEST is 4am local, so AEST coverage is a staffed early shift

Two more markets sit on top of this table. Canadian buyers see C$25 to C$60 an hour onshore, with Toronto and Vancouver executive assistants up to C$75, and most Canadian SMBs buy managed offshore at US$699 to $899 a month (Virtual Gurus and VantaStaff pricing, 2026). Australian buyers see onshore rates of A$39.90 to A$65 an hour against offshore agency rates of A$8 to A$35 (Virtual Coworker, DotVA and Australian roundups, 2026).

Hours: who can actually cover your day?

Start here, because it removes half the options before you look at price.

Write down the hours the assistant must be live. For phones and customer support that is your business day plus the edges: 7am to 7pm local for a trades business, 8am to 6pm for a clinic, 9am to 5pm for a professional firm. For inbox and back-office work it might be “the inbox is clear by 8am”, which is a different requirement and is easier to meet from anywhere.

Then match that window to the table above:

  • US and Canadian phones in your hours: Latin America works on a normal day shift. The Philippines and South Asia work only as a staffed night shift, which a managed provider runs as a normal rotation and an individual freelancer cannot sustain for long.
  • UK phones: South Africa on a day shift, South Asia on a 2pm to 10pm shift, or a UK onshore assistant. Filipino assistants would be working through their night.
  • Australian phones: the Philippines on a day shift, or a staffed AEST shift from South Asia. Onshore Australian assistants at A$39.90 to A$65 an hour are the other route.
  • Inbox, calendar and data work with a morning deadline: any region, because the work is done before you wake up. Offshore desks are strongest here.

The mistake is hiring on rate and discovering the assistant is asleep when your customers call. A good provider will tell you which shift your hours fall into before you sign.

Accent and phones: does it matter?

For typing work, no. For phones, yes, but not in the way most buyers assume.

Callers do not grade accents; they grade whether they were understood, whether the person knew the answer, and whether the call ended with something booked. A neutral, clear speaker with your price book in front of them beats a native speaker reading a script cold. Every region on the table has assistants who pass that bar and assistants who do not, so the test is the same everywhere: ask for a recorded sample call in your industry, or run a live 10-minute role play with your three most common calls.

Two practical notes. In healthcare and legal intake, callers are often stressed, so pace and patience matter more than vocabulary; look for that on the sample call. And if you need Spanish or French alongside English, ask early: bilingual coverage is available on request from some providers and not from others.

Cost per productive hour, not the hourly rate

The rate card is the smallest part of the price. Work it through for a 160-hour month:

Put a value on your own hour and the picture changes. A freelancer at $13 an hour who needs 45 minutes of your day is not cheap. A managed desk at a higher rate that sends you an end-of-day report and asks two questions a week is. The published freelance turnover figure of 2 to 3 months of salary is the number to keep in mind: replacement is a cost whether or not it is on the invoice.

Management: who runs the person day to day?

This is the question buyers skip, and it decides whether the engagement lasts.

There are three models. Marketplace: you hire an individual through Upwork or a similar platform, and you are the manager, the trainer, the payroll and the backup plan. Recruitment-fee agency: the agency finds and places the person and steps back; you manage, often with a replacement window. Managed desk: the provider employs the assistant, runs the daily rhythm, checks the work, covers absences and reports to you.

The managed model costs more than a marketplace hire and less than an onshore premium agency, and it is the only one of the three that removes management from your day. AssistBPO runs the managed model: assistants are employees of the group, each engagement has a named assistant, a trained backup and a team lead, and the client gets a start-of-day check-in and an end-of-day report rather than a supervision job.

Which model fits which business?

Tick the statements that are true for you.

  • Customers call us and a missed call is lost revenue
  • Our hours are a normal business day in one time zone
  • We need the same person every day, with continuity when they are away
  • We have nobody in-house with time to train and check an assistant
  • Our work includes protected data (patients, legal matters, card payments)
  • We need coverage outside our business day, or across two markets
  • The budget is closer to $1,000 a month than $4,000

Read the ticks:

  • Mostly phones, normal day, budget near $1,000: a managed nearshore or offshore desk on a shift matched to your hours.
  • Same person, continuity, no time to manage: any region, but only a managed desk, never a marketplace hire.
  • Protected data: a provider that employs its staff, signs an NDA per client, uses managed devices and MFA, and for healthcare provides HIPAA-trained staff and a BAA. Region matters less than controls.
  • Coverage across two markets, say UK and US: South Asia or South Africa, staffed across two shifts.
  • Budget near $4,000 and a founder who wants a senior EA who has run a C-suite calendar before: onshore premium, or a managed desk with an experienced EA at a fraction of the rate.

What about the UK and Australian clock specifically?

UK buyers have two natural fits. South Africa’s clock is close to London’s, so an assistant there works a normal day. South Asia’s clock is five hours ahead, so a 9am to 5pm UK day is a 2pm to 10pm shift, which managed providers staff as standard. Add the UK’s own market on top: UK-based VAs at £25 to £45 an hour, most VAT-registered, which is a 20 percent uplift for a non-registered client, against offshore full-time desks at £900 to £2,000 a month (UK agency roundups and PayScale UK, 2026).

Australian buyers usually choose the Philippines for the near-total AEST overlap. South Asia is a partial overlap: 9am in Sydney is 4am at UTC+5, so AEST coverage from there is a staffed early shift rather than a normal day. AssistBPO positions Australian coverage as staffed AEST shifts, available on request, and says so plainly rather than promising a day shift that does not exist.

The short version

If the phone is the job, match the shift first. If the inbox is the job, match the deadline. Test the accent with a recording, not a passport. Price the whole desk, including who covers absences and who does the managing. And if you would rather not do the managing yourself, buy a managed desk. Plans depend on hours, desks and coverage. Frequently asked questions

Is an offshore virtual assistant always cheaper than an onshore one?

On the hourly rate, yes, in every published 2026 range: managed offshore desks at $7 to $15 an hour against a PayScale US average of $19.45 and premium onshore agencies at $65 to $79. On total cost it depends on how much of your time the person needs. An unmanaged offshore hire that takes an hour of your day to brief and check can cost more than a managed desk at a higher rate. Compare the cost per finished task, not the rate card.

Can an offshore assistant answer my phones in a US or UK accent?

Accent is a screening question, not a country question. Some assistants in the Philippines, South Africa and South Asia have neutral, easily understood English on the phone and some do not, exactly as with onshore hires. Ask for a recorded sample call in your industry, or run a 10-minute live role play. What callers actually notice is whether the person understood the request, knew the price and booked the appointment, which comes from training and a script.

Which region covers UK business hours best?

South Asia and South Africa. South Africa sits one or two hours ahead of London depending on the season, so a 9am to 5pm UK day is a normal daytime shift. South Asia at UTC+5 covers the UK day as a 2pm to 10pm local shift, which managed providers staff as a standard afternoon shift. The Philippines is 7 or 8 hours ahead of London, so UK coverage there means a night shift for the assistant. Ask any provider which shift your hours fall into.

What is the difference between nearshore and offshore?

Nearshore means a neighboring region in a similar time zone: Latin America for a US or Canadian buyer, or continental Europe and South Africa for a UK buyer. Offshore means a distant region with a large time difference, usually the Philippines or South Asia for US buyers. The practical difference is whether the assistant's normal working day matches yours. Nearshore usually does; offshore needs a staffed shift, which is why the management model matters more with offshore desks.

Who manages an offshore assistant day to day?

It depends on the model. With a marketplace or a recruitment-fee agency, you do: briefing, checking, covering sick days and rehiring. With a managed provider, a team lead on the provider's side runs the daily rhythm, quality checks and cover, and reports to you. AssistBPO assistants are employees of the group with a named backup and a team lead, so the client gets an end-of-day report rather than a management job. Plans depend on hours, desks and coverage.
