What is a backlink?

What is a backlink? A backlink is a link from one website to a page on another website. Search engines treat backlinks from relevant, trustworthy sites as signals that the linked page is credible, which can improve its rankings. Backlinks are earned through useful content, partnerships, directories, press mentions and outreach, and their value depends on the linking site's authority and relevance.

How does a backlink work?

  1. Audit the links you already have and the ones competitors have that you do not, using a backlink tool.
  2. Claim the easy ones first: industry directories, local chambers, suppliers, partners and association member pages.
  3. Create something worth linking to, such as a data study, a calculator, a local guide or an expert explainer.
  4. Reach out to relevant sites and journalists with a specific, short pitch, and track every request and reply in a sheet.
  5. Review new and lost links monthly and disavow only clearly spammy links, if any.

A worked example

A small accounting firm in Vancouver wanted to rank for bookkeeping services in its city but had eight backlinks, most from its own social profiles. An assistant built a list of 60 prospects: local business associations, the software vendors the firm was listed with, three community newspapers and a dozen small business blogs. She submitted the directory listings, asked two partners for a link from their vendor pages, and pitched a short article on year-end checklists to a local publication. Over four months the firm earned 19 relevant links, all tracked in a sheet, and its local ranking climbed.

Where does a backlink show up in your tools?

Backlinks are tracked in Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz and the links report in Google Search Console. Outreach is usually managed in a Google Sheet, Airtable or HubSpot, and press requests come through services such as Qwoted or journalist newsletters.

Common mistakes

  • Buying links from sellers who promise hundreds of them, which invites a penalty rather than rankings.
  • Chasing links from any site that will give one instead of sites your customers actually read.
  • Skipping the obvious directories and partner pages while pitching journalists who will never reply.

Why does a backlink matter?

Search engines still rely on links to judge which sites are trusted, and in competitive local and commercial searches they often decide the order. A patient, honest link program builds authority that keeps paying, while shortcuts can undo years of work in one update.

How does AssistBPO handle a backlink?

Our SEO assistants research link prospects, submit directory and partner listings, and run outreach from your email address with pitches you approve, all tracked in a shared sheet. We do not buy links, join link schemes or use private networks, because those risk the site. Links earned and lost are reported each month with the pages they point to.
