## What does a remote community manager do?

An AssistBPO community manager works a standing brief of 10 duties, and anything on it can be added or dropped in the weekly review.

1. Welcome every new member with a personal message and point them to the right channels or onboarding thread
2. Answer member questions from your knowledge base and route product or account issues to your support desk
3. Moderate posts, comments and DMs against your community guidelines with a documented warning and removal process
4. Seed and run daily conversation: prompts, polls, wins threads and office-hours reminders
5. Host or co-host live sessions, AMAs and cohort calls, and post the recap with links the same day
6. Spot churn signals such as members who have gone quiet and flag them to your success or sales team
7. Collect feature requests, testimonials and repeat questions into a weekly voice-of-member report
8. Keep the member directory, tags and roles tidy in Circle, Discord, Slack or Mighty Networks
9. Coordinate with your marketing desk on launches, event promotion and member spotlights
10. Run ambassador and referral programs: invitations, tracking and thank-you notes

## What skills and tools does a remote community manager need?

The 7 skills below are the ones AssistBPO screens for, and the community manager works them inside 8 platforms you already run.

- De-escalation in public threads: cool a heated exchange without embarrassing anyone
- Judgment on what to answer, what to escalate and what to leave for members
- Platform fluency: Discord roles and bots, Slack workflows, Facebook group tools, Circle spaces
- Light copywriting for prompts, recaps and announcements
- Event hosting basics: agendas, timekeeping, recording and recaps
- Reading engagement data and turning it into a short weekly report

3. 9:30 Daily prompt posted in the main channel; two regulars tagged in to share their result

## Hours and models

Models

- Dedicated community manager, 80 or 160 hours a month, in your hours
- Shared community coverage for smaller groups, a few hours a day at set times
- Evening and weekend moderation window as an add-on

Coverage

US Eastern to Pacific, UK and Canadian business hours from the group's two offices, with AEST shifts on request. Evening and weekend moderation windows are staffed so a Friday-night thread is not left until Monday.

## What are the terms for a remote community manager?

The card, the contract terms and this role's own schedule and screening, in one place.

| Specification | What you get |
| --- | --- |
| Focus, 20 hours a week | $800 a month, 80 hours |
| Dedicated, 40 hours a week | $1,600 a month, 160 hours |
| Standard schedule | Dedicated community manager, 80 or 160 hours a month, in your hours |
| Coverage | US Eastern to Pacific, UK and Canadian business hours from the group's two offices, with AEST shifts on request. |
| Screening | 5 gates, named candidate within 72 hours |
| Setup fee | None |
| Minimum term | Month to month, no lock-in |
| Notice | 30 days, to stop or to change hours |
| If the fit is wrong | Trained backup covers the desk the same day, re-match at no charge |
| Continuity | One named assistant, one named backup, one team lead |
| Who does the work | Employed by SS Support Network LLC, never freelancers or contractors |

These are rate-card starting points. What you pay depends on the hours, the desk and the coverage window, which is what the staffing plan sets. Rates improve as you add assistants. Your staffing plan states the rate for the number of seats you need. [The rate card](https://assistbpo.com/pricing/) carries the other currencies, the add-ons and the six things that move a plan off it.

## How much does it cost to hire a remote community manager?

Plans start at $400 a month for 40 hours, at $10 an hour, and rates improve as you add assistants. Get a staffing plan within 1 business day.

### What moves the plan

1. Hours a week and whether the role is dedicated or shared
2. Seniority and the tools involved
3. Coverage zone: business hours, after-hours or 24/7
4. One person or a pod with a lead

### What the market publishes

Other providers' published ranges, by market, so you have something to hold this against. These are not AssistBPO prices.

| Market | Published range | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| United States | PayScale average $19.45 an hour for virtual assistants (range $12 to $30); Indeed $27.15 an hour; offshore managed staff $7 to $15 an hour typical | PayScale and Indeed via Wishup; Cherry Assistant and Zedtreeo, 2026 |
| United Kingdom | UK-based VA and PA rates £25 to £45 an hour; PayScale employed average £15.33 an hour; offshore full-time remote staff £900 to £2,000 a month | PayScale UK and UK virtual assistant agency roundups, 2026 |
| Australia | Offshore managed agencies publish A$8 to A$35 an hour; onshore virtual assistants A$39.90 to A$65 an hour; agency retainers A$800 to A$3,000 a month | Virtual Coworker, DotVA and Australian agency pricing roundups, 2026 |

## How are remote community managers vetted?

5 gates, in order. A candidate who fails one does not reach the next.

1. English and phone assessment
2. Typing and tool tests
3. Background check
4. NDA and security onboarding
5. Shadowing and QA scorecard

Candidates who clear all 5 gates are proposed to you by name within 72 hours.

1. Candidates reply in writing to eight planted community posts: a newcomer question, a public complaint, a rule breach by a long-standing member, a spam post, a member asking for a refund, a heated exchange between two members. Then a 10-minute call where they explain how they would open a weekly office hours session. We score tone, clarity, judgment and whether each reply would calm a thread or inflame it.
2. Typing at 45 words a minute, then a practical in a Discord or Slack sandbox: set up a channel structure and roles from a brief, configure a welcome flow, remove a planted spam account and record it in a moderation log. A short Canva task covers an event graphic and a Notion task covers the weekly report template.
3. Identity, address and employment history verified by a third-party provider, with criminal record checks where lawful. Because community managers post publicly in your name, we also review each candidate's own public social presence for conduct that would embarrass a client.
4. Group NDA and your confidentiality terms, then security onboarding: admin or moderator seats in your community under accounts you control, MFA on every platform, managed devices, no member data exported outside your tools, and a written escalation path for harassment, legal threats and safety concerns.
5. A week reading a live community alongside a senior manager, then a week posting with every reply reviewed before it goes out. Once live, the team lead scores a monthly sample of replies, welcomes and moderation decisions for tone, accuracy, response time and guideline consistency, and you see the QA scorecard in the weekly review.

The full pipeline is on the [how we hire and manage assistants](https://assistbpo.com/how-we-hire/) page. Assistants are employees of the group, never freelancers, and you never co-employ them.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does it cost to hire a remote community manager?

Plans depend on hours, desks and coverage. Get a staffing plan within 1 business day. For a benchmark, PayScale puts the average virtual assistant at $19.45 an hour in the US and Indeed at $27.15 (via Wishup, 2026), UK agencies publish £25 to £45 an hour for UK-based assistants against £900 to £2,000 a month for offshore full-time staff, and Australian offshore agencies list A$8 to A$35 an hour. A dedicated AssistBPO community manager is one employed person for a block of hours each month, however many channels they cover, with a backup and a team lead included.

### Is it the same person in our community every day?

Yes. One named manager learns your members by name, knows which regulars need a nudge and which threads run hot, and posts in a consistent voice. A backup manager reads the community weekly and takes over during leave with the same guidelines, moderation log and templates, so members do not notice a change in tone. A team lead reviews the weekly report with you. Everything lives in your platform and your Notion, so nothing leaves with a person.

### What hours will the community manager cover?

Your hours, on a fixed shift in your time zone from the group's two offices. A 160-hour plan covers a full day, five days a week; an 80-hour plan suits a morning or afternoon window with a sweep at the start and end. Because communities do not stop at 5pm, many clients add an evening or weekend moderation window so a Saturday complaint gets a reply the same day. US, UK and Canadian hours are standard, and AEST shifts are available on request.

### How are community managers vetted?

Every community manager passes a written assessment on eight planted posts and a short call, a typing test and a platform practical in Discord or Slack with a moderation log, a third-party background check with a review of their own public conduct, an NDA with platform-specific security onboarding, and two weeks of shadowing before posting alone in your community. After go-live the team lead scores a monthly sample of replies and moderation decisions on a QA scorecard, and anyone below standard is coached or replaced from within the team.

### Is the community manager an employee or a contractor?

An employee of the group. AssistBPO is a division of SS Support Network LLC, and the manager is salaried staff with a manager, paid leave and a training path. We never place freelancers or contractors, and you never co-employ the person: there is no agreement between you and the individual, no payroll on your side and no misclassification question. You engage AssistBPO for a staffed community desk, and the backup and team lead come with it.

### Which community platforms do you work in?

Slack, Discord, Facebook groups, Circle, Mighty Networks, Skool, LinkedIn groups and forum software such as Discourse are all common. We work under moderator or admin seats you control, so you keep ownership of the space, the member list and the history. Tools around the community, such as HubSpot or Intercom for member records, Notion or Airtable for the report, and Canva for graphics, are on our training tracks. Anything unusual is learned in onboarding from your setup.

### How does the manager handle moderation and difficult members?

With your guidelines, written down. During onboarding we turn your rules into a moderation playbook: what gets a public reply, what gets a DM, what is removed, when a member is warned, muted or removed, and who at your company signs off on removals. Every action is logged with a timestamp and a reason. Harassment, legal threats and safety concerns are escalated to you immediately rather than handled quietly. The aim is consistency, so long-standing members and newcomers get the same treatment.

### Will the manager answer support questions too?

Simple ones, yes, from your knowledge base and FAQ. Account, billing and bug reports are routed to your support desk with a ticket, and the member is told what happens next, so nothing gets lost in a thread. If you run support and community with AssistBPO, the manager and your support agents share notes and macros, and repeat questions in the community become new FAQ entries. The weekly report shows which questions came up most, which is often the fastest way to find a gap in your docs.
