What are rollover hours? Rollover hours are unused hours from a prepaid block that carry into the next billing period instead of expiring. Providers set limits on how many hours roll, how long they last, and whether they survive a cancellation. Rollover protects a buyer in a quiet month and makes capacity planning harder for the provider.

## How do rollover hours work?

1. The agreement states a cap, such as a percentage of the monthly block or a fixed number of hours.
2. Rolled hours normally carry an expiry, often one or three months, so a balance cannot build indefinitely.
3. Most contracts state that rolled hours are forfeited on cancellation, which is the clause buyers skim.
4. UK agency Virtalent publishes rollover on its 60-hour plan at £1,680, an example of how the term is marketed.
5. Providers usually apply this month's hours first, then draw the oldest rolled hours next.

## A worked example

A tax preparer in Vermont ran a 20-hour monthly plan. From May to August her work fell to six hours a month and 40 unused hours accumulated. In January she needed 60 hours for client onboarding and expected the balance to cover it. The contract expired rolled hours after 90 days, so most had gone. Reading that clause before summer would have led her to drop to a smaller monthly block and top up in January instead.

## Where do rollover hours show up in your tools?

Rollover shows up as a balance line on the provider's monthly statement and as a clause in the service agreement covering cap, expiry and treatment on cancellation. Checking the statement each month is the only way to know whether the balance is real.

## Common mistakes

- Treating rolled hours as money in the bank when the contract expires them after a set number of weeks.
- Staying on a block that is too large because rollover makes the waste feel temporary.
- Giving notice with a large rolled balance and discovering it is forfeited on cancellation.
