Glossary What is data enrichment? Data enrichment is adding missing or useful information to records you already hold, such as company size, industry, job title, direct phone number or address, using other sources. It turns a thin list into one you can segment and target, and it is done by database lookup, a provider feed or manual research. Decide which fields would change a decision, and enrich only those, because every added field has to be maintained. 2. Pick the source: a paid data provider, a public register, the company website or manual research by a person. 3. Record where each value came from and the date it was captured, so stale entries can be found later. 4. Verify a sample by hand before trusting a bulk append, since provider match rates vary by market and company size. 5. Check the lawful basis for holding the added fields under GDPR, PIPEDA, the Privacy Act or state privacy law. ## A worked example A commercial insurance broker in Georgia held 4,000 prospect records with a company name and an email and nothing else. A research assistant added employee count, industry, state and the name of the operations contact, working from company websites and public filings, with a source link and date on every record. The broker could finally build a list of manufacturers with 50 to 200 staff in three states. Outreach to that list ran with lawful consent and do-not-call scrubbing. ## Where does data enrichment show up in your tools? Enrichment is done through provider appends in HubSpot or Salesforce, through spreadsheet lookups in Google Sheets and Airtable, or by hand from public sources. Whatever the method, a source column and a captured-on date should sit beside every enriched field. ## Common mistakes - Appending a bulk file without a sample check, then discovering a third of the job titles are years out of date. - Enriching fields nobody uses, which adds maintenance and privacy exposure for no decision value. - Adding personal data with no lawful basis or retention rule, particularly for UK, EU and Canadian contacts. ## Why does data enrichment matter? Targeting needs attributes, and most small business databases hold only a name and an email. Enrichment is what makes segmentation possible, so a message can be relevant instead of generic.
